The Construction Calculator App That Replaced My Site Notebook

A free construction calculator app that works out concrete, brick, steel, plaster and tile quantities on site — no formulas, no spreadsheets. Used in 150+ countries.

Short answer: Construction Calculator A1 is a free construction calculator app for Android and iOS that computes material quantities, costs and conversions on site — concrete volume, brickwork, steel weight, plaster area, tile count, excavation, paint coverage and more. It has over 1 million downloads across 150+ countries and works fully offline.

Now the long version — because the quantity you calculate wrong on Monday is the truckload you pay for on Friday.

The real cost of a rough estimate

Every site has that one page in the back of a diary. Column dimensions in one corner, a bag count scribbled sideways, an arrow to a number that made sense at the time.

It works until it doesn't. Order 8% too much cement and it hardens in the store. Order 8% too little and the pour stops halfway, the labour sits idle, and the joint you get is the joint you'll be explaining for the next ten years.

The maths itself isn't hard. Volume × mix ratio × dry factor. What's hard is doing it forty times a day, in the sun, with a mason waiting, on a phone with one bar of signal.

That gap — between knowing the formula and having the answer right now — is what a construction calculator app is for.

What is a construction calculator app?

A construction calculator app is a mobile tool that takes site dimensions as input and returns material quantities, weights, costs or unit conversions using standard civil engineering formulas — without the user needing to remember or apply those formulas manually.

Unlike a spreadsheet, it's built for one-handed use on a phone. Unlike a generic scientific calculator, it already knows that a bag of cement is 50 kg, that dry volume runs about 1.54 times wet volume, and that a standard brick with mortar occupies a different space than a brick alone.

What can Construction Calculator A1 actually calculate?

The app carries a library of calculators grouped by trade. The ones that get opened most:

Concrete and RCC

  • Concrete volume for slabs, columns, beams, footings and staircases
  • Cement, sand and aggregate breakdown by mix ratio (M5 through M25 and above)
  • Bag count, not just weight — because you order in bags
  • Ready-mix quantity and wastage allowance

Masonry and blockwork

  • Brick count for any wall dimension, adjusted for mortar joint thickness
  • AAC block and concrete block quantities
  • Mortar volume and its own cement–sand split

Steel

  • Bar weight by diameter and length (the d²/162 rule, applied automatically)
  • Total steel weight for a bar bending schedule
  • Unit weight conversions between metric and imperial

Finishes

  • Plaster area, thickness and mortar requirement
  • Tile count by room and tile size, including wastage
  • Paint coverage by coat and surface type
  • Flooring, skirting and false ceiling areas

Earthwork and site

  • Excavation volume, cut and fill
  • Soakpit, septic tank and water tank capacity
  • Land area conversions — acre, hectare, guntha, bigha, cent, square yard, square metre

General utilities

  • Unit converter across length, area, volume, weight and pressure
  • Cost estimation on top of any quantity result
  • Salary and labour day calculations

Who uses it?

The user base skews toward people who need an answer standing up rather than sitting down:

  • Site engineers and supervisors checking a contractor's material indent before signing it
  • Contractors and masons quoting a client on the spot
  • Civil engineering students verifying textbook problems
  • Architects and interior designers sanity-checking a finish schedule
  • Homeowners building or renovating who want to know whether a quotation is fair

Around 2.1 lakh people open it in a given period, across 150+ countries — which means the same brick calculation is running in Pune, Lagos, Manila and Dubai on the same afternoon.

The offline point matters more than people expect. Basements, remote sites, half-built structures with no signal — these are exactly the places where a quantity question comes up.

How to calculate concrete quantity — worked example

Say you're pouring a slab 6 m × 4 m × 0.15 m in M20 (1 : 1.5 : 3).

By hand:

  1. Wet volume = 6 × 4 × 0.15 = 3.6 m³
  2. Dry volume = 3.6 × 1.54 = 5.544 m³
  3. Sum of ratio = 1 + 1.5 + 3 = 5.5
  4. Cement = 5.544 × (1 ÷ 5.5) = 1.008 m³ → × 1440 kg/m³ = 1,451 kg → 29 bags
  5. Sand = 5.544 × (1.5 ÷ 5.5) = 1.512 m³
  6. Aggregate = 5.544 × (3 ÷ 5.5) = 3.024 m³

In the app: enter three dimensions, pick M20, read the same six numbers. Then add rates and it gives you the cost.

The formula is public. The value is in not re-deriving it while someone waits.

Free vs Pro

The core app is free and ad-supported. Construction Calculator A1 Pro removes ads and unlocks extended features for users who want the tool as a daily driver rather than an occasional check.

For professionals in the US and Canada working in feet-inches-fractions, there's a separate build — Construction Expert A1 Pro — designed around imperial dimensional maths, with a one-time purchase instead of a recurring subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Is Construction Calculator A1 free?

Yes. The standard version is free to download and use on Android and iOS, supported by ads. A Pro version is available for ad-free use and additional features.

Does Construction Calculator A1 work offline?

Yes. All calculations run on the device. An internet connection is only needed for updates.

Which mix ratios does it support?

Standard nominal mixes including M5, M7.5, M10, M15, M20 and M25, with custom ratio entry for design mixes.

Can it handle imperial units?

The main app supports metric and common imperial conversions. For feet-inch-fraction dimensional work typical of US and Canadian practice, Construction Expert A1 Pro is the better fit.

Is it suitable for students?

Yes — it's widely used for checking civil engineering coursework, though students should still learn the underlying derivations.

How accurate are the results?

Calculations follow standard civil engineering formulas and conventional factors such as the 1.54 dry volume coefficient. Site conditions, wastage and local practice still call for engineering judgement.

Which countries is it used in?

Over 150, with the largest concentrations in India, the Gulf, Southeast Asia and Africa.
